D.I.Y. Composting Bins

Posted on: Nov 09, 2015

Landfills are brimming with waste, and new sites are hard to come by. For this reason, there is an interest in conserving existing landfill space and in developing alternative methods of dealing with waste. Don’t throw away materials when they can be used to enrich soil in our current environment – Start composting instead! Some of our residents have asked for some alternate bin ideas for use in their apartments for composting so we decided to put a graphic together of some ideas we brainstormed with UVA’s Off-Grounds Sustainability Advocates. See below for some quick, easy options that can be used as composting containers:

Some of the many benefits of composting:

  • Recycling more – Since organics make up more than a third of the waste stream (over half if you include paper), composting is one of the most effective recycling initiatives.
  • Saving resources – Landfill space is a finite resource with growing demand. Composting saves valuable landfill space for actual trash.
  • Reducing greenhouse gases When organics decompose in landfills they create methane, a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than CO2
  • Showing that you care While Black Bear makes recycling organics as easy as possible, that little extra effort taken to recycle shows that you care about the environment and your community.
