Welcome Back Students!

Posted on: Aug 24, 2012

We are so happy to welcome our many student residents back to Charlottesville this weekend!

Do you know all you need to know to make your move as smooth as possible? Check out the links, hints, and tips below to acclimate yourself to the goings on around town, and to get yourself oriented for the start of the school year.

For the eco-conscious student:

-Start your year off the green way by recycling on move-in day! Be sure to keep hallways clear of boxes for your neighbors, and bring your flattened cardboard to designated collection areas around Grounds. Look for anyone with a UVA Recycling shirt for assistance.

-Get FREE supplies from the Reusable Office Supply Exchange Program. Visit the UVA Recycling Building next to O-Hill Dining Hall and peruse shelves of free binders, folders, ink, trays, etc. Open all year!

-Check out the UVA Bookstore for many green items, like CFL lightbulbs and recycled shool supplies.

-Be sure to follow “Cville’s Favorite Green Resource,” Better World Betty for all the tools you need to be sustainable in our community, including her latest article, “What every newcomer needs to know about the Charlottesville Green Scene.”

For the biking student:

-If you plan to bike around Grounds, be sure to register your bicycle with the UVA Police to aid in identification should your bike become lost or stolen.

-Safety first! Charlottesville strives to be a bike-friendly town, but remember that bicyclists and motorists share the responsibility to drive safely and be aware of all traffic at all times. Don’t forget your helmet, and check out all of VDOT’s laws and safety tips.

-Stop by the On Grounds Bike Sale in the parking lot outside the Student Activities Building on Monday, August 27th, from 11am-3pm. Three of Charlottesville’s bike shops will be there with everything you need to bike around town: helmets, pumps, tubes, lights reflectors, clothing, and demo bikes for fitting and testing.

-Woodard Properties provides bike racks at most of our properties. Please contact us if you can’t find the location of the bike storage area at your property.

For all residents:

-Sign up for renter’s insurance and protect your personal belongings from fire, theft, etc. Ask a leasing professional for more information.

-Keep a copy of UVA’s Calendar of Welcome Events on hand! Dozens of  programs, meals, information sessions, and meetings will be available for all students all weekend long.

-Refer to our Important Info page for important phone numbers, move-in tips, service requests, and information specific to your property.

We are here to serve you and would love to do whatever we can to  make your hectic weekend a little less stressful. Please stop by our leasing office Saturday, from 10am-3pm with any questions and for a refreshing drink of water!
