Fall in Virginia… the season yearned for by VA residents throughout the rest of the year, and a time when non-Virginians visit to enjoy the rich colors throughout the Blue Ridge as the leaves change from green to gold, orange, and red.
There is no doubt that the scenic landscape of the Old Dominion is a prime location to appreciate the dramatic transition from summer to fall, but will the long-anticipated change in foliage happen later than usual this year?
The primary factor in the transformation of color in our trees each year is Chlorophyll (the green pigment) which dwindles as the days get shorter revealing the hues of the autumn palette. Other factors, such as temperature and rain fall, also affect the changing of the leaves, so the warmer temperatures this year could delay the transformation of our beloved fall foliage. A succession of warm, sunny days and cool, crisp nights this time of year ensures the most vibrant change in foliage, so although it may come a little later than previous years, we should still enjoy the spectacular display of color we are accustomed to.
Peak colors are expected in mid to late October, so in the meantime, while awaiting the scarlet Maples, purplish red Dogwoods, and the golden yellow Poplars, start planning your fall adventures. Charlottesville has so much to offer this time of year; apple-picking at Carter’s Mountain, riding along scenic Skyline Drive, wine-tasting at the dozens of area vineyards with spectacular views, hiking the countless trails in and around town, numerous festivals and fairs… the options really are endless!
